Rockers Colonel Sun talk about their upcoming EP!
Hello, Colonel Sun! Thanks for taking time to answer a couple of questions for us. How are you guys doing? We're doing great, thanks!! How would you describe the Montreal rock scene? It's definitely pretty active, and there's a lot to choose from in terms of live venues and bands. As a result, it can sometimes be tricky getting people out to shows, but it's all good. You guys plan on releasing your new EP this fall via Stand Productions. Could you please let us know more about this upcoming release? It's actually our second EP. The first, Suburban Invasion, was released in mid-2016 and was put out independently. One of the owners of Stand works out of the studio where we recorded this new EP and dug what we were doing, so we've decided to work together. The EP only has four tunes on it, but they're a step up from those on the first release. Everything's gotten a little heavier, a little louder, which has also impacted how we play the older tunes live. How long have you worked on this EP? There's never a ton of time spent working on things. I (Scott) write everything and then just bring it to the guys. The other three are all involved in other projects (Patrick Watson, Thus Owls) so don't have as much time to invest in the writing process. After I demo the tunes, the guys add their thing. The six songs from our first EP were written and demoed in a month. I wrote the four tunes on this EP in the same way, but with some gaps in between writing, as opposed to sitting down and writing all the tunes in one shot. Which song is the one that, according to you, best represents the spirit of this EP? That's hard to answer. Musically, I might say the first tune, "Dirtbag," but I'm not sure. Maybe that's why we all agreed to put it first? As the main composer, I thing that the spirit of the EP really comes from the lyrics, since I'm always writing about the same thing: time. The band and I are all in our 40s, so time is something that's on my mind a lot; how much time do I have to do this? how much time will it take to do that? how much time do I have left? I’m sure you have at least one funny story from your recording sessions to share with us! Not really, unfortunately. Everything ran really smooth. I guess that it could be worth mentioning, considering the way that we work, how we only jammed on the tune "Browbeaters" a few times before recording it. But the guys in the band are pros, so they normally don't need much time. Do you currently have any other projects in the making? I don't. I'm also a music teacher at a college in Montreal, so that's my other gig. But, as mentioned, the other guys are all active in other projects. The last words are for you. If you have a message to convey, here’s your chance! I'm just excited for people to hear our music. The intention has always been to make music and play shows. That's what we've all been doing for our whole lives, and it's just too hard to stop. So we'll keep doing it as long as it's fun!! Thanks for your time!
