Familiar Things talk about their EP “Fade Into The Scenery”!
Hello Chris. Hope you're doing great? First of all, thanks for taking time to chat with me. For those who are not familiar with your band, could you please introduce yourselves, as well as your roles in Familiar Things? Thanks for taking the time to talk to us! I am Chris Simmons, but everyone calls me ‘Bebo’. I am the bassist, and one of the singer/songwriters in Familiar Things. Jon Puleio is also a singer/Songwriter, and switches between guitar and piano. Tyler Magazzu (a.k.a Ty) Is the band lead guitarist, and producer. All of our recorded music was done by Ty in his living room, using a 2 channel mixer. Keven Murray is our rhythm guitarist and self proclaimed bad boy. Last but not least is our drummer, Miles Hundley. His real name is Ammiel (Which is much cooler) but we call him Miles anyway. You guys have dropped, back in February, your EP titled “Fade Into The Scenery”. Would you mind introducing this release to our readers? This E.P. is the five members of Familiar things attempt to learn how to coexist and write songs that can incorporate all of our influences. In terms of sound, it finds its connection in early 2000’s Pop Punk, notably Yellow Card, and Mayday Parade. Through the years we have all been inspired by the raw, and emotional song writing style. The lyrics of the E.P, where varied by subject matter, all reflect our belief of using relatable emotions or situations, to give the listener insight into our scope of reality. Music is an easy way to understand how someone feels, and we try and reflect that in our writing. How were the writing and recording process for this EP? Like I mentioned in an earlier question, Ty Magazzu, apart from being a KILLER lead guitarist, is also an incredibly accomplished producer. We recorded the whole E.P. over the course of a month in Ty’s living room. This band, if no where else, has found it’s legs on the unstable, ever-changing landscape of DIY, homegrown music making, and we love it. We are so grateful to have a member like Ty on the team, he provides us with an avenue to realize our own potential. If you had to pick one track off of this EP, which one would you choose and why? Tourniquet is a great song, with collaborative musical decisions, and dynamic interest. Okay, Then uses two simultaneous metaphors in its lyrics. Meant A Lot is an incredibly honest, and vulnerable song about a break up. October has a key change! (Which trust us, is cool) I can’t choose between any of our songs because each is cool in its own regard, and I had such a great time working with all of it. Our advice to the reader would be listen to the whole E.P, and tell us what you think. How would you describe the Philly punk scene? I would describe the Philly punk scene as loyal to the end. Lets start with the fans. At EVERY show, without fail, I meet people who who either know people I know, Let music I like, or are there seeing their buddies band 2nd, and stay until 11:30 to see some band they don’t know. Then the actual bands are just as loyal and supportive. We might be weekend touring with a band who we played with on our second show. Everyone is just in it to have a good time, make the best music they can, and try and find some level of success, using collaborative measures to get there. I guess you might say it’s what it’s all about. Last but not least, what would you say has been the biggest highlight of your band’s career so far? The band has had our share of exciting moments over the past few months that range from, crowd size, to tightness, to stage presence. Different show that just felt so good for different reasons! But, we believe a highlight for us is deciding upon, and making moves on new music. There was a string of shows for a while where we spent a lot of time perfecting our set, and practicing our songs, but it felt stagnant after some time. So to be able to actually write and learn new material, and be as excited about this next crop of songs as the last, is pretty great. Thanks for your time!
