The history of BLACKFOG began in 2007, when two persons from Liski (Voronezh region, Russia) met each other and after few months of conversations, they decided to start with their own project. Initially and until now, the BLACKFOG is:
- Unlight (Pavel Zhukov), instruments&music
- Coyote (Oleg Gugunishvili), lyrics&vocals
Those 2 guys found that their musical preferences are similar: both of them was listened to Black metal only. The sources of inspiration were the same: Mayhem, Darkthrone, so called Black Legions (France), most Finnish and Swedish stuff. There were not too much choice in provincial town, that goes for music as well, but if you search something and if you are ready to sacrifice – the results will be sensible. All they heard from music – was found from websites, written conversation with people from Moscow and abroad. Besides, Coyote was also interested in themes of NSBM from Stellar Winter and The Pagan front in general… However, he has never been national-socialist and, obviously, he would never be. Anyway, neither Unlight, nor Coyote doesn’t pose themselves as a religious persons, so the questions about their believing or religion are set as their own bitch…
But the primal source of inspiration was the horror of forests and ancient evil, which could be felt if you walk among villages and woods in cold nights…
The first demo-tape is dated 2009 and was called as a Split demo-tape “Blackfog/Orcus Castellum”, which was the experiment, first test if you please… Despite the inferior quality of the recording and limited possibilities, the demo-tape was of great interest. Thanks to it, BLACKFOG found their own fans, among them – the owner of the underground label Northern Lights Prod. From Moscow. The label released this demo in 50 copies; most of them was sold to Gorbushka – famous musical shop – for retail sales.
The demo was too raw, but listeners told that there were something dark and cold, which summons inhuman horror, strange uncomfortable feeling. The tape was made under the pressure of sickness-based perception of nightmares, of dark forest, and of course, the stillness, which can drive crazy. That was the quintessence of the True Ancient Black Metal.
In the same 2009, BLACKFOG recorded the material for EP. All records was finished, even the front cover and back cover has been done. However, there were no release went on, and BLACKFOG stopped. And BLACKFOG has kept silence for 10 years.
In 2020, Unlight and Coyote decide to make rebirth of BLACKFOG. The EP “Where Desert Shadows Dance” has finally been published like self-production, but there were no copying. The quality became better, a lot of mysterious moments appeared, but there are no inhuman horror here. The EP sounds like Medieval Black Metal.
The new material is expected to be finished until the end of 2020. That will be new story, rebirth of BLACKFOG, burdened by the stones of grief, misanthropy, suffering, sickness and madness…
